Teaching: Cutting of the Flesh

Luke 2:21-22
"And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the Law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord."

Here is a description of the Law of Circumcision; every male child was brought to the priest to have “FLESH CUT” on the eight day. Mothers had to go through a seven day purifying process and then the child was circumcised. Leviticus 12:1-3

Believers in Christ must understand that the natural always points to the Spiritual and what happened to Israel in the natural translates to a spiritual experience.

It can be said this way, the New Testament is in the Old contained while the New Testament is the Old explained you have the New Testament in the Old concealed while the New Testament is the Old revealed. It is a pattern, type or shadow but not the substance. A shadow in itself has no substance; it is the reflection of the substance. Example: In the Old Testament Moses was commanded to kill a lamb and put the blood on the doorposts of the houses and that blood saved the children of Israel from the angel of death. Jesus is the New Testament Lamb who shed His blood for all people. He is the substance; the lamb of the Old Testament is the shadow or type. So as we read this passage of scripture we see a purification that Mary the mother of Jesus had to go through. Christians also must go through a refining process! We call them tests, trials and tribulations. So God puts us in difficult places to purge and cleanse. Notice that at the end of the purification He Cuts Flesh! Flesh speaks of attitudes, motives and ideas that are not of God! Colossians 2:10-11 says: "For you are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ." This is an initial placing into the Body of Christ and we belong to Him, but He takes us further, God is refining, purging and cleansing His vessels. The heat of fire when placed on metals extracts impurities. So, the tests, trials and fiery trials God allows into are lives is for our benefit. He is conforming us to the image of Christ, Romans 8:28-29.

Notice verse 21 in Luke chapter 2 says; the child was named before he was conceived in the womb. WOW, God knows you and has called you by name before the foundations of the world. Jeremiah 1:1-10. God proclaims in the Spirit realm and then it manifests into the natural. The significance of this is, “YOU ARE HIS” no matter what you are going through. Sometimes we think we have done something wrong but God is working the character of Christ in you.

Now at the end of the purification God requires flesh to be cut. When we think it is finished it has only just begun. God is going deeper. Joshua 5:2-3 says: At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel a second time. And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of foreskins.

The children of Israel had just wandered for forty years. God tried, tested and humbled them to see if they would obey Him. Deuteronomy 8:2-6. The old generation, which disobeyed Him, had perished and now He was getting ready to bring the new generation into the Promised Land. This land flowed with milk and honey but there were enemies they needed to subdue. Before they could enter to this new dimension God said “CUT FLESH” Joshua 5:8 says: "And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole."

Cutting flesh was the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant. The children of Israel needed to come into covenant or they could not enter. We as believers in Christ must allow the Holy Spirit to “CUT FLESH” This speaks of motives, attitudes, doctrines and ideas that are not of Him. Notice verse 8 it says, they could not go anywhere until they were “WHOLE” The Hebrew word is, "Chayah", which means to restore, repair, recover or make alive. God gives us time to heal after He cuts these things from our lives. God is preparing us to enter our Promised Land and for battle. We cannot go in with old mindset and attitudes that have hindered us in the past. We must do things His way.

As we move forward into 2005 I anticipate awesome things. God has prepared us and ordained us to accomplish His will, so arise and be of great courage as we enter our Promised Land.
