Teaching: Rebekah, The Bride of Preparation
In Genesis 24:58 a woman named Rebekah, is being asked by her family if she would be willing to go on a journey to marry a man she has never seen. Amazingly, her response is yes. She was willing to go. In 1 Corinthians 2:9-10, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit”.
The story begins in Genesis 24, Abraham desires a wife for his son Isaac. Abraham commissions his eldest servant that ruled over all that he had, to go back to Abraham’s country and family to seek a bride for his son.
Let us examine the symbolism that is portrayed in this story. We see a father’s desire, a bride for his son. Also, the father sending his eldest servant to find a woman who would be willing to come and marry a man she has never seen.
Abraham is a type of (GOD THE FATHER), Isaac his son is a type of the (SON OF GOD) Jesus, the eldest servant is a type of the (HOLY SPIRIT), and the woman Rebekah, is a type of the (CHURCH OF JESUS) or the (BRIDE OF CHRIST). Abraham sends forth the eldest servant (HOLY SPIRIT) to find a woman (CHURCH) for his son Isaac, (SON OF GOD) to be his bride.
What a beautiful parallel of Christ and his Church! In verse 58 of Genesis 24 we see the family asking Rebekah (WILT THOU GO) with this man? Amazingly, she said yes. She was being asked to leave her family, friends and her way of life to follow a man she did not know that would lead her to her future husband, whom she never met. What trust she had in God to follow the servant over four hundred miles to a strange land.
For every Born Again Christian in these last days the Holy Spirit is asking the same question (Wilt Thou Go), are you willing to follow the servant, are you willing to put up with the hardships and difficulties in following the servant? Rebekah could have said no, but she said yes. Rebekah had to travel over four hundred miles on camel back to reach her destination. It was not easy, but she was willing to suffer to follow the servant to her Isaac. Rebekah was willing to go and willing to serve. In the story the camels needed to be watered, the servant watched in amazement as Rebekah volunteered to water all ten camels. Rebekah willingly went to the well, and pulled up bucket after bucket to water them, not an easy task. Rebekah was willing to serve and not asking to be served. The well represents the (Waters of Salvation). Are you willing to pull up fresh water? Are you willing to pay the price to receive and give fresh water to your brother and sister that have need of a drink?
As Christians, the Holy Spirit will take us through places that are difficult. Places we do not desire to go through, however the question still remains, Wilt Thou Go? Will you pay the price to follow the servant?
On this journey the servant begins to give gifts to Rebekah. Gifts of jewels, clothing and precious items. These gifts speak to Christians concerning the gifts of the Spirit found in 1 Corinthians 12.
As Rebekah rode the camel to her destination, she never complained about the mode of transportation or any difficulty, WHY? Because she knew that the camel and hardships she was enduring was the very thing that was carrying her to her Isaac.
We as believers in Christ must follow the servant (HOLY SPIRIT) and we must realize that the difficulties, tests and trials of life are the (CAMELS) God uses to carry us to our bridegroom Jesus.
In these last days allow the Holy Spirit to take you on the ride of your life! Allow him to carry you to your Isaac and be like Rebecca who chose to trust the Lord with all her heart and did not lean on her own understating, but chose to serve and be obedient and follow the servant!
